3 Dentist-Approved Snacks

A lot of our patients have been spending a lot of time at home due to COVID-19. This had led to a lot of questions regarding what snacks are worth keeping around, and what snacks aren’t. Common snacks like candy, soda, and potato chips are notoriously bad for your teeth. As your trusted dentist in Chevy Chase, MD, we wanted to provide you with some snack suggestions that are dentist-approved. Here are our top 3 suggestions:

Cheese

Cheese is a great snack to keep around your home. Cubed cheese, sliced cheese, or string cheese are our personal favorites. We recommend cheese as a snack because it has several benefits for your smile. Firstly, cheese is full of calcium which your teeth need to continue to be strong. Secondly, cheese helps neutralize any harmful acids left behind on your tooth surfaces from a previous meal. And finally, cheese is easy to chew which makes it the perfect snack for our patients who suffer from jaw pain or a TMJ disorder.

Assorted Nuts

We understand that sometimes you might crave a crunchy snack. For this, we recommend nuts. Almonds, cashews, and walnuts all offer various vitamins and minerals that benefit your oral health. Additionally, nuts are great for stimulating saliva production which helps keeps your smile moist and ready to wash away any bacteria left on your tooth surfaces. Saliva is full of proteins that protect your tooth enamel and prevent tooth decay.

Fruit Smoothies

Fruit smoothies are a healthy treat for the entire family. Not only do they taste good but you can include any of your favorite fruits in a smoothie and customize it to your cravings. Any fruits will do, but we recommend strawberries and kiwis. Strawberries contain a ton of Vitamin C, which is necessary for overall health as well as your dental health. Vitamin C helps prevent gum disease as well, which plagues many of our patients. Kiwis are also great because they contain a lot of calcium.
